Can You Combine Climbing Kilimanjaro With a Tanzania Safari?

Short answer: Yes. Mount Kilimanjaro and the northern safari parks share the same gateway, Kilimanjaro International Airport, so combining them is straightforward. Climb first, then go on safari. A 6- to 8-day climb plus a 5- to 6-day safari makes a trip of 13 to 16 days. Add 3 to 4 days for Zanzibar.
Why is Kilimanjaro easy to combine with a safari?
Most Kilimanjaro climbs start from Moshi, Tanzania, about an hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The northern safari circuit starts in Arusha, Tanzania, about an hour from the same airport in the other direction. There is no extra flight between the mountain and the parks: you walk off the mountain, spend a night in a hotel, and your safari vehicle collects you the next morning.
That makes Tanzania one of the few places where you can summit the highest mountain in Africa and see the Serengeti in a single two-week trip.
Should you climb Kilimanjaro before or after your safari?
Climb first. There are three good reasons:
- You start the climb fresh. Acclimatization is the main reason climbers turn back, and you want every ounce of energy on summit night.
- The safari is recovery. After a week of hiking, days spent seated in a vehicle watching wildlife, with comfortable lodges each night, are exactly what tired legs need.
- Your climb dates stay fixed. Climb permits and crew are booked for specific days. A safari has more flexibility if a flight is delayed.
Pack with the order in mind. Arrive with your trekking gear, and plan to leave the bulky items at your Moshi or Arusha hotel before the safari starts. Ask when booking so storage is arranged in advance.
How many days does the Kilimanjaro climb need?
The summit, Uhuru Peak, stands at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). The route and number of days matter more than fitness for most climbers, because more days on the mountain give your body more time to adjust to altitude. That is why longer versions of each route generally have better summit success.
These are the climbs we currently run, all with pricing on request:
| Route | Days | Character | Itineraries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marangu | 5 or 6 | Hut accommodation, same path up and down | 5 days, 6 days |
| Machame | 6 or 7 | Popular and scenic, camping, climb high and sleep low | 6 days, 7 days |
| Rongai | 6 or 7 | Approaches from the north, quieter | 6 days, 7 days |
| Umbwe | 6 | Steep and direct, for experienced hikers | 6 days |
| Lemosho | 7 or 8 | Remote western start, strong acclimatization profile | 7 days, 8 days |
| Northern Circuit | 8 | Longest route, circles the north side | 8 days |
For a trip that also includes a safari, we usually suggest Machame in 7 days or Lemosho in 7 or 8 days. Both give good acclimatization without stretching the total trip past about two weeks. What does a combined Kilimanjaro and safari trip look like?
Our 15 Days Kilimanjaro Hike and Wildlife Safari, from $5,678 per person, is a good template:
- Day 1: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to Moshi.
- Days 2 to 8: Machame Route. Machame Camp, Shira Camp, Lava Tower to Barranco Camp, Karanga Camp, Barafu Camp, summit attempt and descent to Mweka Camp, then down to Mweka Gate and on to Arusha.
- Day 9: Drive to Tarangire National Park for game drives.
- Day 10: Cross the Ngorongoro highlands into the Serengeti, with a cultural visit on the way.
- Day 11: Full day of game drives in the Serengeti.
- Day 12: Game drives on the way back to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
- Day 13: Game drive on the Ngorongoro Crater floor.
- Day 14: Walking cultural visit with the Hadzabe people, then return to Arusha.
- Day 15: Transfer to the airport.
If you have fewer days, a 6-day Machame climb followed by a 5-day safari fits in about 13 days. For how long to spend in each park, see how many days you need for a Tanzania safari.
What if you want to see Kilimanjaro without climbing to the summit?
Not everyone wants a week at altitude. Our 11 Days Kilimanjaro with Big Five and Cultural Immersion, from $4,867 per person, starts with a guided day hike on the mountain and a Materuni waterfall and coffee tour near Moshi, then continues into a full northern safari: Tarangire, the Hadzabe at Lake Eyasi, two full days in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.
Can you add Zanzibar as well?
Yes, and it is the natural last stop. Zanzibar’s beaches are the best place to rest after both a climb and a safari.
- How you get there: nonstop flights connect Kilimanjaro International Airport and Zanzibar in a little over an hour, and several airlines fly the route daily. Flights also connect Arusha with Zanzibar. See how to get to Zanzibar.
- How long to stay: three to four nights.
- Total trip length: about 17 to 20 days for climb, safari and beach.
Our safari and beach itineraries show how the second half of that trip works. The 11 Days Tanzania Honeymoon Safari and Zanzibar Beach (from $5,092 per person) includes a Serengeti balloon safari before the beach, and the 12 Days Tanzania Private Safari with Zanzibar Beach Escape (from $5,293 per person) spends two full days in the Serengeti. We build the climb onto the front of either trip on request. For more on the beach half, read safari and beach holidays in Tanzania and what to do in Zanzibar.

When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro and go on safari?
The best months for all three are the dry seasons:
- Late June to October: the longer dry season. Clear conditions on the mountain, excellent game viewing, and the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti from late July. Also the busiest time, so book early.
- January to early March: the shorter dry season. Quieter trails, and calving season in the southern Serengeti.
- April and May: the long rains. Trails are wet and some Zanzibar hotels close. We do not recommend a combined climb in these months.
- November: the short rains, lighter and less predictable. Climbs still run, with more cloud.

Frequently asked questions
Should I climb Kilimanjaro before or after my safari?
Before. You arrive fresh for the climb, and the safari afterward is a comfortable way to recover, since most of it is spent seated in a vehicle. It also avoids a safari delay cutting into your acclimatization days.
How many days do I need for Kilimanjaro and a safari?
Plan 13 to 16 days. That covers an arrival day, a 6- to 8-day climb, a 5- to 6-day safari including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, and a departure day. Add 3 to 4 days if you also want Zanzibar.
Which Kilimanjaro route is best to combine with a safari?
Machame and Lemosho are the most common choices. Both reach Uhuru Peak in 6 to 8 days and include acclimatization days. Longer versions give your body more time to adjust to altitude, which improves your chance of reaching the summit.
Can I combine Kilimanjaro, a safari and Zanzibar in one trip?
Yes. Climb first, then safari, then fly to Zanzibar for a beach stay. Nonstop flights from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Zanzibar take a little over an hour. The full trip usually runs 17 to 20 days.
Can I see Kilimanjaro without climbing to the summit?
Yes. A guided day hike on the lower slopes, combined with a village, coffee farm or waterfall visit near Moshi, gives you time on the mountain without a multi-day climb. It fits easily before a safari.
