6 Days Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Duration
6 Days

Overview

The Rongai Route is the only established path that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, starting at Nalemuru Gate near the Kenya border. The northern side of the mountain sits in a rain shadow, so Rongai is noticeably drier than the southern routes, which makes it a strong choice in the rainy seasons and an easier place to keep boots and gear dry year round. It is also one of the quietest ways to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro: far fewer trekkers start here than on Marangu or Machame, and the wilder northern slopes keep that remote feel for most of the week.

The route climbs gradually through conifer forest and moorland to the dramatic camp beneath Mawenzi Volcano, where a built-in acclimatization hike adds height before you cross the rocky semi desert to School Hut Camp. Summit night runs from School Hut to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, and the descent follows the Marangu trail down the other side, so you traverse the mountain rather than retracing your steps.

The package includes pickup at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a hotel night in Moshi, Tanzania with a pre-climb briefing from your guide, full crew support on the mountain, and a second night at your Moshi hotel after the descent.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp

Your guide and support crew meet you at your hotel in the morning for introductions and a final equipment check, then you drive around the mountain to Nalemuru Gate on Kilimanjaro's northern side. Once permits are issued and registration is complete, the trek sets off through coniferous forest on the mountain's northern slope, a quieter and drier landscape than the southern rainforest approaches. The altitude discipline starts on day one: abstain from alcohol and caffeine, drink more than 4 liters of water daily, and consider Diamox for altitude sickness prevention after checking with your doctor. The first night is at Simba Camp, just above the forest line. Elevation: 2,020 m to 2,625 m. Distance: 8 km. Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Simba Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  2. Day 2

    Simba Camp to Kikilewa Camp

After breakfast the trail climbs steadily out of the last vegetation and into open moorland, with the great dome of Kibo Volcano ahead of you for much of the day. This stage is noticeably more physically demanding than the first, with a full 1,000 m of altitude gain, so the crew holds a slow, sustainable pace. By afternoon you reach Kikilewa Camp, where you settle in, refuel, and keep working on hydration as the air thins. Elevation: 2,625 m to 3,630 m. Distance: 10 km. Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Kikilewa Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  3. Day 3

Kikilewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

An early start takes you up to one of the most dramatic campsites on the mountain: Mawenzi Tarn Camp, set beside a small lake at the foot of the jagged Mawenzi Volcano. The walking day is short, which is deliberate, because the afternoon is reserved for acclimatization. After lunch and a rest, you head out on an easy hike that gains about 200 m before returning to camp, a gentle climb designed to speed up the acclimatization process ahead of the summit push. Elevation: 3,630 m to 4,310 m. Distance: 6 km. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours. Acclimatization hike: 4,310 m to 4,510 m, 2 km, 1 to 2 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Mawenzi Tarn Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  4. Day 4

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to School Hut Camp

Today the landscape changes completely as you cross toward the main summit massif, leaving the moorland behind for a rocky semi desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trek ends at School Hut Camp, your launch point for the summit. The afternoon routine matters: sleep as much as you can, avoid any strenuous activity, and drink plenty of water, because the summit attempt begins in the middle of the coming night. Elevation: 4,310 m to 4,715 m. Distance: 9 km. Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours.

    Accommodation:
    School Hut Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  5. Day 5

Summit Night: School Hut Camp to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Camp

The summit day starts with a night departure from School Hut Camp, climbing by headlamp toward the crater rim. Every pair of climbers has their own guide watching stamina and condition throughout the ascent. Reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa, usually comes around sunrise, with the glaciers and the curve of the crater lit up below you. The descent is long, dropping all the way to Horombo Camp on the Marangu side of the mountain, and it demands real care: 90 percent of all accidents happen on the descent, including broken arms and legs, so keep your concentration even when tired. Elevation: 4,715 m to 5,895 m to 3,720 m. Distance: 21 km. Hiking time: 12 to 14 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Horombo Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  6. Day 6

    Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate

A warm breakfast fuels the final descent down the Marangu trail, through moorland and then rainforest, to Marangu Gate at 1,860 m. The team gathers at the gate to congratulate the group, and commemorative certificates are presented to successful climbers. From there your driver transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a celebration dinner of your own choosing. Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,860 m. Distance: 18 km. Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours.

    Meals:
    Breakfast and Lunch

Altitude and Your Health

Uhuru Peak is 5,895 m. Almost everyone feels the altitude, and acute mountain sickness is common on Kilimanjaro, including on well-paced routes. Acclimatization varies from person to person and is never something you finish; a longer route improves your odds, it does not remove the risk.

Tell your guide about every symptom. Headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness at rest, loss of coordination, or confusion all matter, and they matter more at night. Guides carry a pulse oximeter and check you daily.

Descent is the treatment. If symptoms worsen, going down is not a failed summit attempt, it is the correct response, and your guide's call to descend is final. Every climb is escorted by guides trained to make that decision.

See a travel clinician before you book, especially about acetazolamide and any existing heart or lung condition. Nothing on this page is medical advice. For current guidance, read the US CDC on high-altitude travel and altitude illness. Reviewed 24 August 2026.
