6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Duration
6 Days

Overview

The Machame route is Kilimanjaro’s famous Whiskey route, the scenic southern approach chosen by climbers who want the mountain’s full variety in six days on the trail. The path climbs through dense rainforest, crosses the open ridges toward the Shira Plateau, passes beneath the peak by Lava Tower, and takes on the Barranco Wall before the final push from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak.

The pacing is what makes this itinerary work. Day 3 carries you up to Lava Tower at 4,630 m for lunch and then drops you back down to sleep at Barranco Camp at 3,960 m, a classic climb high, sleep low profile that primes your body for the summit midway through the trek. Machame is a challenging camping route with a long summit night, so it rewards climbers with sound fitness, and it repays the effort with the most varied scenery of any six day line up the mountain.

Your package begins with pickup at Kilimanjaro International Airport and a night at your hotel in Moshi, Tanzania, where your mountain guide briefs you the evening before the climb. A second night in Moshi after the descent lets you recover before flying home. To compare routes and prepare for the trek, see our Climb Mount Kilimanjaro guide.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Machame Gate to Machame Camp

The climb begins with a morning drive from your hotel in Moshi, Tanzania to Machame Gate, where the crew completes park registration and the porters organize their loads. From the gate the trail climbs steadily through dense montane rainforest on a winding path that is often muddy underfoot. Your guide sets an unhurried pace and covers the habits that matter from here on: drink more than 4 liters of water a day, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and consider Diamox if your doctor has recommended it for altitude. By late afternoon you reach Machame Camp for your first night on the mountain. Elevation: 1,800 m to 3,010 m. Distance: 5 km. Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Machame Camp
    Meals:
    Lunch and Dinner
  2. Day 2

    Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast you climb out of the forest and follow an ascending path onto a steep, rocky ridge covered in heather. The walking day is short but steady, and the views widen as you gain height toward the Shira Plateau. Once you have settled in at Shira Camp, you head out again for an acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower, gaining some extra altitude before returning to camp to sleep low. This climb high, sleep low rhythm is what prepares your body for summit night. Elevation: 3,010 m to 3,845 m. Distance: 5 km. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours. Acclimatization hike: 3,845 m to 4,120 m, 2 km, 1 to 2 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Shira Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  3. Day 3

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

From Shira Camp the route swings east toward Lava Tower over a long series of ascents and descents through high alpine terrain. Lunch is served at Lava Tower, the high point of the day, before you descend into the Barranco Valley to sleep at Barranco Camp. Touching 4,630 m and then dropping back down gives your body another strong acclimatization stimulus midway through the trek. From camp the face of the Barranco Wall rises ahead of you, the first challenge of the next morning. If anyone in the group is feeling unwell, the guides can switch to the gentler porter route, which tops out at 4,400 m instead of 4,630 m. Elevation: 3,845 m to 4,630 m, then down to 3,960 m. Distance: 11 km. Hiking time: 6 to 8 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Barranco Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  4. Day 4

    Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

The day starts early with the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble of roughly one hour where hands come off the trekking poles and the exposure gets the heart going. From the top you rest and take in superb views of the Kibo volcano before the trail rolls on through repeated ascents and descents to Karanga Camp. The final stretch is a harder pull up to Barafu Camp, the launch point for the summit. Dinner is served early and you turn in with your gear laid out, because the summit push begins in the middle of the night. Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,640 m. Distance: 11 km. Hiking time: 8 to 10 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Barafu Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  5. Day 5

Summit Night: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Millennium Camp

You leave Barafu Camp in darkness and climb slowly toward the crater rim with headlamps tracing the switchbacks above. Every two climbers share a personal guide who monitors physical and mental condition throughout the night. The final steps bring you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa at 5,895 m. After photos and celebration you descend to Barafu Camp for a two hour rest, then continue down to Millennium Camp for the night. The guides keep the descent deliberate: tired legs on loose scree are how most injuries happen. Elevation: 4,640 m to 5,895 m, then down to 3,820 m. Distance: 15 km. Hiking time: 8 to 12 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Millennium Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  6. Day 6

    Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

A final breakfast on the mountain is followed by a steady descent through the forest to Mweka Gate, the park exit. At the gate the whole crew gathers to congratulate the group, you add your impressions to the guestbook, and summit certificates are presented at the office. From there you are driven back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a well earned rest. Elevation: 3,820 m to 1,650 m. Distance: 12 km. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours.

    Meals:
    Breakfast and Lunch

Altitude and Your Health

Uhuru Peak is 5,895 m. Almost everyone feels the altitude, and acute mountain sickness is common on Kilimanjaro, including on well-paced routes. Acclimatization varies from person to person and is never something you finish; a longer route improves your odds, it does not remove the risk.

Tell your guide about every symptom. Headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness at rest, loss of coordination, or confusion all matter, and they matter more at night. Guides carry a pulse oximeter and check you daily.

Descent is the treatment. If symptoms worsen, going down is not a failed summit attempt, it is the correct response, and your guide's call to descend is final. Every climb is escorted by guides trained to make that decision.

See a travel clinician before you book, especially about acetazolamide and any existing heart or lung condition. Nothing on this page is medical advice. For current guidance, read the US CDC on high-altitude travel and altitude illness. Reviewed 24 August 2026.
