6 Days Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Duration
6 Days
Difficulty
Challenging

Overview

Umbwe is the steepest and most direct route on Kilimanjaro. The first day alone gains close to 1,300 m on a forested ridge, and the trail keeps that no-nonsense character until it joins the southern circuit at Barranco Camp. It is also the least crowded trailhead on the mountain, so trekkers who choose Umbwe get two days of near solitude before merging with the main flow of climbers. This is a route for confident, fit hikers, ideally with previous experience at altitude, who want the boldest line up the mountain.

The fast start is balanced by a smarter second half. From Barranco the itinerary follows the scenic southern circuit over the Barranco Wall to Karanga and Barafu, with acclimatization hikes built into two afternoons to help your body catch up with the rapid early gain. Summit night runs from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, and the descent exits through Mweka Gate, so you see a different side of the mountain on the way down. If you are comparing routes, the Climb Mount Kilimanjaro page lays out the alternatives.

The package includes pickup at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a hotel night in Moshi, Tanzania with a pre-climb briefing, full guide, cook, and porter support, and a recovery night at your Moshi hotel after the trek.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Your guide and climb support crew arrive at your hotel in the morning for introductions and a last equipment check before the drive to Umbwe Gate, the quietest trailhead in Kilimanjaro National Park. From the gate the trail climbs hard through dense rainforest, gaining nearly 1,300 m on a steep ridge, which sets the tone for this direct route. Your crew starts the altitude routine immediately: no alcohol, more than 4 liters of water a day, and Diamox if you and your doctor decided it is right for you. The first night is spent at Umbwe Camp in the upper forest. Elevation: 1,640 m to 2,930 m. Distance: 11 km. Hiking time: 5 to 7 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Umbwe Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  2. Day 2

    Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

An early start takes you out of the rainforest and into the brush and heather of the low alpine zone. Today's trekking is of moderate length, and around lunchtime you arrive at Barranco Camp, which sits at 3,960 m inside a huge volcanic fault with the Western Breach towering above. Here the Umbwe Route merges with the busier southern circuit, and the free afternoon is valuable acclimatization time at nearly 4,000 m: rest, hydrate, and study tomorrow's objective, the Barranco Wall, from the comfort of camp. Elevation: 2,930 m to 3,960 m. Distance: 6 km. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Barranco Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  3. Day 3

    Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Early wakeup and breakfast, then the day begins with the climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble that looks harder than it is and rewards you with close-up views of Kibo. The rest of the route to Karanga Camp rolls through a series of gains and descents across ridges and valleys, which is honest work at this altitude even though the net elevation change is small. After lunch at camp you head out on an acclimatization hike up the trail toward Barafu Camp before returning to sleep at Karanga. Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,035 m. Distance: 5 km. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours. Acclimatization hike: 4,035 m to 4,270 m, 2.5 km, 1 to 2 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Karanga Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  4. Day 4

    Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

In the morning after breakfast you make your way up to Barafu Camp at 4,640 m, the summit camp perched on an exposed ridge and the starting point for the night ascent of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. After rest and lunch there is one more acclimatization hike, climbing toward Kosovo Summit Camp and back, to give your body a final push of adaptation. Then the priorities are simple: eat, drink, lay out your summit clothing and gear, and get to sleep early, because the wake-up call comes around midnight. Elevation: 4,035 m to 4,640 m. Distance: 6 km. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours. Acclimatization hike: 4,640 m to 4,800 m, 2 km, 1 to 2 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Barafu Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  5. Day 5

Summit Night: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Millennium Camp

You depart Barafu Camp in the night and begin the summit climb by headlamp. Each pair of climbers gets personal attention from their own guide, who monitors pace and condition through the cold hours before dawn. Sunrise near the crater rim leads to the final stretch along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa. After celebrations and photos, the long descent begins, dropping past Barafu and continuing down to Millennium Camp at 3,820 m, where the thicker air makes for the best night's sleep of the trip. Elevation: 4,640 m to 5,895 m to 3,820 m. Distance: 15 km. Hiking time: 8 to 12 hours.

    Accommodation:
    Millennium Camp
    Meals:
    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  6. Day 6

    Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast you start the final descent through the rainforest to the park exit at Mweka Gate, at 1,650 m. The group gathers for congratulations, there are celebratory entries in the guestbook, and commemorative certificates are presented at the office. Your driver then takes you back to your hotel in Moshi to wash off a week of mountain dust and toast the summit. Elevation: 3,820 m to 1,650 m. Distance: 12 km. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours.

    Meals:
    Breakfast and Lunch

Altitude and Your Health

Uhuru Peak is 5,895 m. Almost everyone feels the altitude, and acute mountain sickness is common on Kilimanjaro, including on well-paced routes. Acclimatization varies from person to person and is never something you finish; a longer route improves your odds, it does not remove the risk.

Tell your guide about every symptom. Headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness at rest, loss of coordination, or confusion all matter, and they matter more at night. Guides carry a pulse oximeter and check you daily.

Descent is the treatment. If symptoms worsen, going down is not a failed summit attempt, it is the correct response, and your guide's call to descend is final. Every climb is escorted by guides trained to make that decision.

See a travel clinician before you book, especially about acetazolamide and any existing heart or lung condition. Nothing on this page is medical advice. For current guidance, read the US CDC on high-altitude travel and altitude illness. Reviewed 24 August 2026.
