How Many Days Do You Need for a Tanzania Safari? Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater

Short answer: Plan 6 to 7 days for a first Tanzania safari that includes the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, counting arrival and departure days. That gives you two full days in the Serengeti, a game drive on the crater floor and a stop at Tarangire. Add 2 to 3 days to follow the Great Migration into the northern Serengeti.
Why does a Tanzania safari take longer than people expect?
The parks of northern Tanzania, often called the northern circuit, are close together on a map and far apart on the road. Most safaris start in Arusha, Tanzania, near Kilimanjaro International Airport. From there:
| Drive from Arusha to | Typical time by road |
|---|---|
| Tarangire National Park | About 2 hours |
| Lake Manyara National Park | About 2 to 2.5 hours |
| Karatu and the Ngorongoro Crater rim | About 3 to 4 hours |
| Central Serengeti (Seronera) | 5 to 6 hours of driving, longer with game viewing on the way |
The road to the Serengeti crosses the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, so a good itinerary uses that drive as part of the safari rather than dead time. It still means the first and last day of any Serengeti visit are mostly travel. That is why a three- or four-day trip that includes the Serengeti feels rushed.
How many days do you need in the Serengeti?
Two full days is the minimum. That usually means three nights in or near the park: arrive in the afternoon, two full days of game drives, and a morning drive on the way out.
Three to four days makes sense if:
- You are visiting between late July and early September and want to reach the Mara River area in the northern Serengeti.
- Photography or big cats are the focus and you want time to wait at a sighting.
- You plan a hot air balloon safari, which takes up an early morning.
For where to base yourself by season, see our guides to the regions of the Serengeti and where to stay in the Serengeti.
How long do you need at Ngorongoro Crater?
One game drive on the crater floor is enough for most travelers. The crater is compact and wildlife is concentrated, so a morning or long half day usually covers it. Descend early: stay the night before on the crater rim or in nearby Karatu.
A second day in the Ngorongoro area is worth it if you want a walk on the crater rim, a visit to Olduvai Gorge, or a Maasai village visit. See what to do at Ngorongoro Crater.
Should you add Tarangire or Lake Manyara?
Yes, if you have the days. Tarangire is known for large elephant herds and baobab trees and sits on the way from Arusha to the crater, so it adds a strong game drive without adding much driving. Lake Manyara is smaller and works as a half-day stop. On a 7-day trip, most travelers choose one of the two.

What does a 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari look like?
This is the shape of our 7-day northern Tanzania safari, and it is the length we suggest for most first-time visitors:
- Day 1: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Arusha.
- Day 2: Drive to Tarangire National Park for a full game drive, then on to Karatu.
- Day 3: Cross the Ngorongoro highlands with a crater viewpoint and Maasai village stop, then game drive into the Serengeti.
- Day 4: Full day of game drives in the Serengeti.
- Day 5: Morning in the Serengeti (or an optional balloon flight), then drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
- Day 6: Game drive on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, then return to Arusha.
- Day 7: Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
Each night offers a midrange, luxury or high-end lodge, so the length of the trip and the style of the trip are separate decisions.
Does the time of year change how many days you need?
It can, because the Great Migration moves through different parts of the ecosystem across the year. As a general pattern, and never guaranteed:
- January to March: calving season on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area. Reachable on a standard 7-day route.
- May to June: herds move through the western Serengeti, with Grumeti River crossings. Add a day.
- Late July to early September: Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti. This is the farthest point from Arusha, so plan 8 to 10 days or fly one way.
- October to December: herds move south again through the northern and eastern Serengeti.
Timing shifts with the rains each year. See the Great Migration season and the best times to visit the Serengeti.
Should you drive or fly between the parks?
Drive if you want to see the landscape change from Arusha to the crater highlands to the Serengeti plains, and want to keep costs down. On a private safari, the drive is also game viewing.
Fly if your trip is short or you are heading to the northern Serengeti. The flight from Arusha to Seronera in the central Serengeti takes about an hour, compared with most of a day by road. A common combination is to drive in via Ngorongoro and fly out. Ask for a fly-in or fly-out option when you request a quote. See getting to the Serengeti.
What if you also want Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?
Add three to four days for a beach stay on Zanzibar after the safari. Our 8 Days Tanzania Wildlife Safari with Zanzibar is the shortest version; the 12 Days Tanzania Private Safari with Zanzibar Beach Escape gives two full days in the Serengeti before the beach. Climbing Kilimanjaro adds six to eight days. See how to combine Kilimanjaro with a Tanzania safari.
How many days should you plan? A quick guide

Frequently asked questions
Is 5 days enough for a Tanzania safari?
Five days works for Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater. It is tight for the Serengeti, because the drive from Arusha to the central Serengeti takes most of a day each way. For the Serengeti and the crater together, plan at least 6 to 7 days.
How many days should I spend in the Serengeti?
Two full days is the minimum for the central Serengeti, which means three nights in or near the park. Plan three to four days if you want to follow the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti, which is farther from Arusha.
How long do you need at Ngorongoro Crater?
One game drive on the crater floor, usually a morning or a long half day, is enough for most travelers. Stay the night before on the crater rim or in Karatu so you can descend early.
Is it better to drive or fly to the Serengeti?
Driving lets you see Ngorongoro and the highlands on the way and keeps costs down. Flying from Arusha to a Serengeti airstrip takes about an hour and saves most of a day each way, which matters on shorter trips or when the herds are in the far north.
How many days do I need to see the Great Migration?
Plan 8 to 10 days. River crossings in the northern Serengeti usually happen from late July to early September, and reaching that area and waiting for the herds takes more time than a standard northern circuit trip.
