What to do at Mwea National Reserve

There are a number of tourist activities and what to do at Mwea National Reserve, on your visit to this wildlife reserve in Kenya, enclosed by an electric fence. Elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, lesser kudu and endangered Rothschild giraffes are present here, as well as more than 200 bird species.

Game viewing.

A guided game drive will reward you with a great experience upon your visit as there is a number of wildlife to spot here including a number of the big 5 that are often seen on several occasions. There are a number of well-maintained safari trucks that may favor a 4 x4 wheel drive to ensure your smooth drive. The park is small to visit within 2 days. Major wildlife attractions include the  elephants, Rothschild giraffes, Common zebras, Lesser kudu, Buffalo, Water Buck, Bushbuck, Impala, Vervet Monkeys, Aardvark, Yellow baboons, Grants gazelle, Dik-dik, Cape hare, Warthog,  Black-backed jackal, Duiker, Sykes monkeys, Genet cat, Slender mongoose, Stripped ground squirrel, Dwarf mongoose, Crested porcupine, Rock Hyrax, Tree Hyrax, and tortoise.

Bird watching.

For the wings lover, there is something for you here, to keep your binocular busy for a day. Bird watching can be done through the game drive or boat trip to the Islands to spot some water birds. Over 200 bird species can be encountered on your visit. Renowned for its water birds and waders, over 2 hundred species of birds have been recorded inside the reserve. This warranted it being an Important Bird Area IBA. The reserve is the simplest covered location wherein the globally threatened and Kenya-endemic Hinde’s babbler is understood to arise.

Boat Trip.

Boat trip on the lake is rewarding as you’re able to spot a number of hippos, crocodiles, and birds during your ride on this beautiful water body. Keep your eyes at the lake showers are number of wildlife come to drink water, you may spot a rare one as well.

Camping

The reserve has seven campsites and they have not crowed as it receives few numbers of visitors to the park, the majority of the tourists preferring bigger safari Game Park for a greater wild adventures and spotting. The Seven camps include: Mbogo, Silvester, Mavuria, Kyangosi, Hippo-Point, Kanyonga, and Githechu.
