Kibale National Park: A Haven for Chimpanzees and Biodiversity

Overview:

Situated in Uganda, Kibale National Park spans 766 square kilometers and has earned the title of the “primate capital” for being home to a remarkable diversity of primates, including the endangered chimpanzees. Established in 1932 and formally recognized in 1993, the park is characterized by moist evergreen forests, grasslands, and swamps, ranging in elevation from 1,100 to 1,600 meters.

  1. Chimpanzee Trekking:
    • The Kanyanchu Primate Walk offers encounters with 13 primate species, with chimpanzees being the stars of the show.
    • Two shifts for chimpanzee trekking: morning (0800) and afternoon (1400), lasting 2 to 5 hours.
    • Full-day chimpanzee habituation experience starting at 0600, allowing visitors to spend the entire day with the primates.
  2. Night Walks:
    • Guided night walks offer sightings of nocturnal creatures such as Potto, Spectacled Demidoff’s, and Thomas’s Galagos.
    • The walk starts at 8 pm near the park briefing center.
  3. Bird Watching:

3 Days Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Tour

Forest Regulations:

  • Groups are limited to 8 visitors per guided walk.
  • Maximum one hour allowed with chimpanzees.
  • Maintain an 8-meter distance from chimpanzees.
  • Avoid chasing, ascending, or walking on higher ground.
  • Refrain from entering the forest if sick.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and avoid eating near primates.

Getting to Kibale National Park:

  • From Kampala:
    • Two routes available: Kampala via Mubende to Fort Portal or Kampala via Mbarara and Kasese to Fort Portal.
    • Travel to Fort Portal, then proceed to Kanyanchu Tourist Centre.
  • From Kigali – Rwanda:
    • Approximately a 6-hour drive via Gatuna or Kagitumba border, passing through Ntungamo, Kasese, and Fort Portal.
