Nestled within Mbeere District, Eastern Province, Mwea National Reserve stands as a tranquil retreat just 200 kilometers from Nairobi. This haven of natural beauty is bordered by the Tana River to the south, Thiba River, and Kamburu Dam to the east, with the northern boundary secured by an electric fence to protect wildlife from nearby settlements. Jointly managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service and Mbeere County Council, Mwea National Reserve spans 48 square kilometers.

The reserve’s savannah ecosystem features small hills with bushy vegetation, scattered large trees, and open grasslands. Key landmarks include the confluence of rivers Tana and Thiba, Kamburu, and Masinga hydro-electric dams, fostering a rich biodiversity. While accommodation options are limited, Masinga Lodge near Masinga Dam and camping facilities at various sites offer comfortable stays. Access the reserve by road from Nairobi, following routes via Thika, Matuu, Masinga Dam, or Embu and Machanga. For a more leisurely journey, small flights from Wilson Airport land at Masinga Airstrip.
