Overview
Kenya’s southern circuit in six days, and a deliberate contrast: three parks that look nothing like each other.
Amboseli is the postcard, with big elephant families on swamps fed by Kilimanjaro’s meltwater and the mountain itself behind them at dawn. Tsavo West is the opposite: volcanic hills, lava flows and the Mzima Springs, where an underwater viewing chamber puts you at eye level with hippo and barbel. Tsavo East is bigger and emptier than either, red dust and open plain, with elephants stained the color of the soil they dust themselves in.
Together Tsavo East and West make up one of the largest protected areas on earth, and their draw is space rather than density. You will see fewer vehicles than in the Mara and work a little harder for your sightings. The routing keeps drives short, and the Nairobi to Amboseli and Tsavo East to Nairobi legs are the only long ones.
