Activities at Laikipia Plateau

There is always something for everyone at Laikipia Plateau.  Activities at Laikipia Plateau do exist for the visitors here. From wildlife areas, such as Lewa Downs and Borana, a protective haven for the endangered black rhino; to ranches and conservancies further north more focused on community and adventure activities such as horseback riding, camel and walking safaris. For a totally unique Kenyan experience, visit Laikipia and have the world at the palm.

Horseback riding

Today many of the old livestock ranches have been converted to luxurious safari lodges where you can ride horseback, walk the hills with local Maasai and learn about conservation efforts, which have made Laikipia famous. Laikipia is all about immersive travel. Children can go tubing on the rivers, fish, and camp. The atmosphere is very laid back and the day very much revolves around.

Bird watching

You can as well decide to go bird watching, to spot some of the rare species here as the number of bird species do exist within the plain area of the plateau. Keen bird watchers can look forward to the sight and sound of close to 350 bird species. Birding is one of the major activities at Laikipia Plateau.

Helicopter Safari

If you’re feeling particularly flush or pushed for time, then Original Travel can also arrange a helicopter transfer between lodges or down to the coast, but a visit to Mt Kenya is particularly recommended. The peaks that remain are the lava plugs of the eroded volcano and traveling by helicopter, you will land at one of the many spectacular lakes and tarns that cover the upper slopes. A delicious picnic breakfast is supplied and you can spend a few hours fly-fishing for rainbow trout from the lakeshore. To experience the mountain at its best, visits are scheduled in the early morning, so you will be on the mountain by 0730.

Even more adventurous is a flight to Ol Lolokwe, the sacred mountain of Northern Kenya’s Samburu people.

Camel back safari

Be adventurous and do like the Samburu do; ride a camel through the African wilderness. A fun-filled an alternative to the traditional game viewing experience, a camelback safari allows guests to get up-close with plains game such as zebra, giraffe, and ostrich. This activity can be tailor-made to your preferences. Ideally suited to this landscape, riding on a camel, with the tinkle of the chiming camel bells is a once in a lifetime

Visit Chimpanzee sanctuary

Situated within Ol Pejeta, Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established in 1993 to protect orphans formerly housed at the Jane Goodall Institute in Burundi. Since chimpanzees are not indigenous to Kenya, it is the only place in the country where these charismatic apes can be seen, ideally by taking a boat trip along the Ewaso Nyiro River, which runs through the riparian forest where they now live. You can as well take a tour and visit the chimpanzee sanctuaries, to have a great experience with the chimpanzees, as you enjoy a wonderful moment here.

Visit Rhino sanctuary

A stay in the Laikipia the region wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Lewa Downs Conservancy. A UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its exceptional community conservation model, the conservancy is a stronghold for the protection of East Africa’s black rhino. Once a sprawling cattle ranch, Lewa was transformed into a conservation area by landowners working closely with the region’s communities. This tour offers the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the conservancy’s conservation and community initiatives as well as to visit the area’s prehistoric archaeological sites.

Many northern game species are found here, such as gerenuk, Grevy’s Zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest, and the reticulated giraffe. It is also the only area to have a growing population of wild dogs, and there are burgeoning numbers of leopard, lion, rhino, elephant, and many other game species. This is in many ways thanks to the pioneering commitment of the Laikipia community and the Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF), established to promote conservation across the district’s private reserves

Denser wilderness and the chance to explore on foot characterize this area – the chance to view lion, elephant and other big game outside of a vehicle is incredibly exhilarating and certainly a highlight.

Walking safari

Viewing wildlife on foot, accompanied by local armed guides, provides an up-close and personal interaction with the wildlife and the flora and fauna. The ability to do a walking safari experience is one of the factors that make Lewa a truly unique safari destination. Sit quietly and watch elephant, impala, waterbuck, and many other species come to drink water in the nearby marsh or chose to drive, walk, or ride to a secluded area. The bush here is thicker and scrubbier than it is in the south, and while the Big Five are all present, densities are quite low.
