Overview

A week in Rwanda is enough for both halves of what the country offers: savannah game viewing in the east, and gorillas in the northwest.

You start with Akagera National Park, two and a half hours from Kigali on the Tanzanian border. It is the only savannah park in Rwanda, and after two decades of restoration it holds all of the Big Five, with lion reintroduced in 2015 and eastern black rhino in 2017. Expect open plains, papyrus wetland and a chain of lakes, and take the boat safari on Lake Ihema for hippo, crocodile and shoebill.

Then north to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking, and golden monkeys in the bamboo the following morning. The trek starts with a dawn briefing at Kinigi and puts you on steep, wet ground for anywhere from one to seven hours round trip. Permits are capped daily and sell out months ahead in the dry seasons, so we buy and hold yours before you travel.
