Overview

Two days is the right length for Akagera. One gets you a game drive; two gets you an evening, a night in the park, and the early morning when the animals are actually moving.

Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park, two and a half hours east of Kigali on the Tanzanian border. It was nearly lost after 1994 and has been rebuilt over two decades with African Parks: lion came back in 2015 after fifteen years absent, eastern black rhino in 2017. Elephant, buffalo and leopard never left. That makes it a Big Five park again.

You spend a full day on game drives through open plains, papyrus swamp and a chain of lakes, and take a boat on Lake Ihema among hippo and crocodile. Over 480 bird species have been recorded here, and Ihema is one of the better places in the region to look for shoebill.
