Overview

One day, one hour with a gorilla family, and back in Kigali the same evening. Rwanda is the only country where that is realistic, because Volcanoes National Park is about two and a half hours from the capital on good tarmac.

You leave Kigali before dawn for the briefing at Kinigi, where the rangers assign your group to one of the habituated families based on where it moved overnight and how far you are able to walk. Then you go in on foot through farmland, bamboo and then thick forest. Finding them takes anywhere from one to seven hours round trip; there is no way to know in advance.

You get one hour once you arrive. That limit is set by the park to keep the gorillas calm and reduce the risk of passing them human illness, and it is enforced. You stay roughly seven meters back and let them decide the distance.

A permit is USD 1,500 per person per day and is the bulk of this trip’s cost. Permits are dated, capped daily, and sell out months ahead in the dry seasons.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Experience

At 4:30 am, our safari driver-guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Kigali and drive to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri, Musanze Province. The park is approximately a 2.5-hour drive away and is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. You can take scenic photos at various stopovers along the journey. At 7:00 am, we will arrive at the park’s headquarters in Kinigi Village, where a ranger will brief you on the rules and regulations of gorilla tracking before you head into the jungle. The trek can last from 3 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements. Although the trek can be strenuous, it is immensely rewarding. You will spend one hour with the gorillas, during which you can take as many photos as you like. Afterward, we will return to Kigali, stopping for lunch at a local restaurant along the way. Upon arrival in Kigali, you can either be dropped off at the airport for your departure or at your hotel in Kigali. Meals: Lunch
