Overview

Two primates, two countries, three days. This trip works because Kigali is closer to the gorillas than Kampala is.

You land in Kigali and drive two hours north to Musanze, at the foot of the Virungas. The next morning you trek golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, a shorter and much livelier walk than the gorilla trek, through bamboo where troops of forty or more move fast and noisily overhead.

That afternoon you cross into Uganda at Cyanika and continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Day three is the gorilla trek: a dawn briefing, then steep, wet, genuinely thick forest, and anywhere from one to seven hours of walking before you find the family. You get one hour with them. You return to Kigali the same evening.

Both permits are dated and limited. We buy and hold them before you travel.
