Murchison Falls National Park: Where Nature Unveils its Majesty

Overview:

Size and Heritage:

  • Largest national park in Uganda, covering approximately 3,893 square kilometers.
  • Established in 1926 as a game reserve, believed to be the oldest national park in Uganda.

Unique Features:

  • The falls are the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids, transforming the river into a placid stream that flows into Lake Albert.
  • Hiking to the top of the falls offers a breathtaking view.

Biodiversity and Conservation:

  • Vegetation: Savannah, riverine forest, and woodland characterize the diverse vegetation.
  • Wildlife: Lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hartebeests, oribis, Uganda kobs, chimpanzees, and diverse bird species, forming a Lion Conservation Unit since 2005.
  • Conservation Area: Combined with Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and Karuma Wildlife Reserve, forming the Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA).
