You can get to Pangani by flight, boat or road

Bus

There are two roads to get in Pangani, via Muheza 44km or Tanga town 53km. The best connections between Pangani and Tanga are via the rehabilitated coastal road, with about five buses daily (1½ hours). The first departure from Pangani is at about 6.30am, so you can connect with a Tanga–Arusha bus. Everyday there are five or six buses departing for Pangani from the main bus stand in Tanga, Shakila, Rahaleo and Doweto are companies operating on the destination. The ride takes 2.5 hours by public transport. If you’re coming from Dar es Salaam, you can also have a road transfers and the drive takes about 5 or 6 hours.

There’s at least one daily direct bus between Pangani and Dar es Salaam. Pangani is also connected by dalla-dalla with Muheza, from where there are connections to Tanga or Korogwe, but the road is worse than the coastal one and transport is sporadic.

There’s also a daily bus between Tanga and Mkwaja (at the northern edge of Saadani National Park) that passes Mwera village (6km from Ushongo) daily at about 7am going north and 3.30pm going south. It’s then usually possible to hire a motorcycle to take you from Mwera to Ushongo.

Flight

There are flights from Dar, Arusha and Zanzibar, and Kilimanjaro Airport to Pangani Airport. Coastal Aviation has daily flights connecting Mashado airstrip (just south of Pangani town, on the south side of the river).

Boat

Dhows sail regularly between Pangani and Mkokotoni, on the northwestern coast of Zanzibar, but these are officially off-limits for foreigners and not recommended. Better and safer is the faster MV Ali Choba, which sails several times weekly between Ushongo (south of Pangani), Pangani and Zanzibar Island (Kendwa). The trip takes about two hours and takes up to five passengers, or six or more passengers between Ushongo and Zanzibar Island between Pangani and Zanzibar).. Another option is a motorized dhow transfers between Pangani town and either Nungwi or Kendwa on Zanzibar Island. Allow about four hours for the trip.
