Kakamega Forest National Reserve is the only tropical rain forest in Kenya of the Guineo-congolian type. It once stretched across the Central Africa to East Africa. Kakamega forest is located in Western Kenya, Kakamega East District (Kakamega County). Kakamega Forest is 420km/260mi northwest of Nairobi and 45km/27mi north of Kisumu.

By road.

The drive from Nairobi takes roughly about six hours to reach Kakamega Forest Reserve. From Kakamega town to Kakamega forest station in Kakamega rain forest is 18km.

Road access to Kakamega is via Kakamega Town, easily accessible from Kisumu by bus/matatu. You’ll need your own transport, or to be part of a safari, to get to the forest.

The reserve is best explored on foot. The forest has many clearly marked walking trails. There are excellent and fully qualified local guides are available for walking. See Trekking for more details

By Flight

Most people flying from Europe or North America to Kenya arrive in Nairobi as this is the biggest transport hub, and there is a lot of choice for tickets. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is located 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi. Kenya’s second international airport is Moi International Airport (MBA) situated 9km/6mi west of Mombasa.
