The Fischer’s Tower and Tourism
The Fischer’s Tower has given a great boost to tourism in this park, with a great number of tourists coming in for a picnic and cycling get way from Nairobi. It’s one of the greatest attraction at Hell’s Gate National Park that has greatly boosted the number of visitor to the park.
Nature Trail walk
The Fisher Towers Hiking Trail is closed to motorized use and mountain bike travel. The route of the Fischer Towers Hiking Trail is marked by cairns (small rock piles) where it crosses areas where the path of the trail is not obvious. If you find yourself scrambling down ledges, retrace your route until you locate the trail.
The single-track Fisher Towers Trail has both dirt and rock pavement surface. It’s easy to follow and is well marked with cairns or rock stacks to point the way. No shade is found on the trail, so plan your hike accordingly on hot days. It’s best in the early morning or evening. Remember to bring plenty of water, use sunscreen, and wear a hat.
There is no water along the trail so come prepared. In the summer, a gallon of water per day per person is recommended. Sturdy walking shoes or light boots are also a good idea. Be careful if you are walking the trail during or after a rainstorm. Erosive forces are still at work and falling rocks are a hazard. The trail skirts unfenced drop-offs. Parents should watch children carefully and caution them about the danger of falling.
Film and Photography
Fisher Towers and the country along the Colorado River may look familiar. They have served as a scenic backdrop for at least two dozen motion pictures, as well as videos and commercials. The Western-style films Wagon Master, Against A Crooked Sky, The Comancheros, and Rio Conchos all featured views of Fisher Towers. One scene with Richard Boone in Against A Crooked Sky was filmed next to the Fisher Towers Recreation Site parking area.
The main setting of the 1994 film, The Lion King is heavily modeled after the park, where several lead crew members of the film went to the park to study and gain an appreciation of the environment for the film. The 2003 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life was shot on location in this park.
Rock Climbing.
The rock walls are just made for climbing. An easy but famous climb is Fischer’s Tower. You need equipment and a guide to climb in the park, so ask before in your hotel. A volcanic plug near the northeastern border of Hell’s gate national park, with a height of approximately 25 meters.
