By Flight.

Many airlines have flights to Dar es Salaam International Airport. From the airport to Bagamoyo it is roughly 1 – 2 hours drive by car, depending on the time of day and the traffic. Bagamoyo is about 70km north of Dar es Salaam and an easy drive along good tarmac

Boat

You can charter and connect between Bagamoyo and Zanzibar easily through None or motorized dhows to Zanzibar Island and take around four hours with a good wind. Foreigners are discouraged from taking these, however, and you’ll need to register first with the immigration officer in the old customs building, which is also the departure point. Departure times vary, and are often around 1am, arriving at Zanzibar Island sometime the next morning if all goes well. There is no regular dhow traffic to Saadani or Pangani.

There are 3 ways to get from Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo by bus, taxi or car

Bus

Dalla-dallas (minibuses) from Makumbusho (north of Dar es Salaam along the New Bagamoyo Rd, and accessed via dalla-dalla) head to Bagamoyo (two hours) throughout the day. The transport stand in Bagamoyo is about 700m from the town centre, just off the road heading to Dar es Salaam. There are Taxis to the beach hotels, and bajajis (tuk-tuks) slightly less. There is also a daily dalla-dalla to Saadani village via Msata on the main Arusha highway, departing Bagamoyo at about 10am (three hours).

Car & Motorcycle

Bagamoyo is about 70km north of Dar es Salaam and an easy drive along good tarmac. The best route for self-drivers is via Old Bagamoyo Rd through Mikocheni and Kawe. It’s also possible to reach Bagamoyo from Msata (65km west on the Dar es Salaam–Arusha highway, north of Chalinze) on a good, paved 64km road. The coastal road between Bagamoyo and Saadani National Park has been graded and is in good condition, although enquire first about the bridge over the Wami River if travelling during the rainy season.
