Mount Kenya is located in central Kenya, just south of the equator, around 150 km (95 miles) north-northeast of Nairobi. The area around the mountain is protected in the Mount Kenya National Park, which is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The National Park is around 620 km² (240 square miles) and receives up to 15,000 visitors every year. Day 1: PICK-UP NAIROBI AND TRANSFER CHOGORIA – MOUNT KENYA
You will be picked up by our safari driver guide from your hotel in Nairobi, after your morning breakfast and be transferred by road to Chogoria at Mount Kenya were your mountain hiking safari will commence in the company of the guide and porters. Catch up with lunch, before the start of your hiking adventure. Penetrate the forest at 1600m. Depending on time, Mount Kenya trekking weather conditions or client preferences, you may have the option to drive to a clearing at 2,400m – possibly hiking some of the ways. Most hikers opt to camp here, though some do choose the additional 7 km to the Park Gate at 2,950m. Enjoy an evening meal served around a campfire. Retire to the tents and to the bizarre sounds of the Mt Kenya rain forest. Dinner and overnight at the camp. Meal Plan: Lunch & dinner.
Day 2: A TRIP TO MUGI AND LAKE ELLIS
After early morning breakfast, get your bags ready, and hike through the remaining part of the forest via the bamboo zone to the National Park Gate. Settle down for some snacks as you grace up for the remainder of the days walk to a secluded campsite at Lake Ellis. Follow the main tourist track for about an hour, then take a right turn and head up towards Mugi Hill and Lake Ellis 3200m where you will have a rest for your lunch. Later after relaxation proceed to a private campsite next to a small stream. The walk through the tussock grass, heather, and protease is quite beautiful. Dinner and overnight at the camp. Day 3: A HIKE TO MINTOS HUT AREA
After morning breakfast, climb over a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours, and eventually join the tourist track on the normal Chogoria route (4,100m). The panoramic view of George’s Valley is breathtaking as you hike towards Itinguni and the Northern Moorlands. Enjoy your lunch at a small stream crossing, before continuing for an hour to the Mintos Hut area (4200m) for your dinner and overnight. After relaxation at the camp, undertake a 10-minute walk to the “Temple” which is well worth the effort. This is a 500ft vertical cliff that derives its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they stand as if they are praying. It is advisable to take an early night’s rest in preparation for the next day’s summit climb. Dinner and overnight at the camp. Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & dinner.
Day 4: ACCESSING PT LENANA
Take a cup of tea at 3 am local time and begin an early climb on your way to Pt Lenana, via Simba Col. before sunrise. Access the top – optimistically before the clouds submerge the summit and interrupt photography – a demonstration of your victorious mountain climbing! Descend from the peak via the same route as far as Simba Col. Turn left and head on down a steep scree slope to Shiptons Camp, arriving late morning. You take a rest for a couple of hours, before the final 2 hours walk heading down the mountain along the Sirimon route to the Liki North area (3990m) for the night. Dinner and overnight at the camp. Day 5: PARK GATE TO NAIROBI
After breakfast, leave Park gate early in the morning back to Nairobi, filled with the great experience of concurring this great mountain. As you wrap up your trip, lunch will be served in a local restaurant in Nairobi, and you will either be dropped at your booked hotel in Nairobi, or at the airport for your onward flight, filled with great memories. End of the hiking tour.
