Overview
People come to Amboseli for two things: elephants at close range, and Kilimanjaro standing over them. Both are reliable here in a way they are almost nowhere else.
The park sits on the Kenyan side of the mountain, and the swamps fed by its meltwater keep large elephant families in the same few square kilometers year round. These are some of the most studied elephants in Africa, and some of the oldest big-tusked bulls left on the continent. The habitats change fast as you drive: the dry bed of Lake Amboseli, sulphur springs and wetland, open savannah, and acacia woodland, each holding something different.
A word on the mountain. Kilimanjaro is usually clear at dawn and again in the late afternoon, and often hidden by cloud in the middle of the day, which is why we get you out early. June to October and January to February give the best odds.
