How to get to Maasai Mara Reserve.

There are two options for your doubt about how to get to Maasai Mara Reserve when you come from Nairobi. You can choose to come by road or to fly to the Mara. Maasai Mara is a 4.5-hour straight drive from the airport.

By Road

It’s about 270 km from the capital Nairobi City and takes about 4-5 hours by road or 40-45 minutes by flight. The road is great for the most part. There is a section from Narok town to Sekenani Gate that is a dirt road but fairly good. The other road through Lemek and Aitong town is not good at all and very bumpy. During the rainy season, roads may become impassable unless you have a 4x4 vehicle and experience with driving in poor conditions. It also gives you a great way to see more of the country as you drive to the package for your mission trip.

By Air

There are several airfields which serve the camps and lodges in the Maasai Mara, including Mara Serena Airstrip, Musiara Airstrip and Keekorok, Kichwa Tembo, Ngerende Airport, Ol Kiombo and Angama Mara Airstrips, and several airlines such as SafariLink and AirKenya flies scheduled services from Nairobi and elsewhere multiple times a day. Helicopter flights over the reserve are limited to a minimum height of 1,500 ft. Flights from Nairobi take approximately 45 minutes and depart from Wilson Airport. You may find yourself having a few stops on the way due to other passengers landing at one of the 6 airstrips in the Mara. This is by far the best way to travel, but you do miss out on seeing more of the country. You can also get a chartered flight into the Mara Ecosystem. This is best organized by a safari operator.
