Mount Meru is located inside Arusha National Park. Most visitors fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport, which is 60 kilometers/35 miles away. You can reach Arusha by domestic flight or long-distance bus from several locations in Tanzania and Kenya. It’s also possible to arrive in Tanzania overland as part of a multi-country itinerary. Tanzania is bordered by Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, DRC, Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda and also its border with the Indian Ocean. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Requirements for entry into Tanzania differ from country to country and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest Tanzanian embassy or consulate what documents you need to travel to Tanzania.

  • You need a valid passport. The passport must be valid for six months after entry into the country. You need one blank page on your passport for entry stamps.
  • You need a visa to enter Tanzania. Most nationalities can apply online for an ordinary tourist visa, currently USD 50, which Tanzania Immigration may issue for up to 90 days. United States passport holders are the exception: they must apply for the multiple-entry visa, currently USD 100, even for a single tourist visit. Some nationalities require a referral visa and must apply well in advance. Check your own category on the Tanzania Immigration eVisa guidelines and the published visa fees.
  • Yellow fever. A yellow-fever certificate is required if you are arriving from, or have transited, a country with a risk of transmission. It is not a universal requirement, so check whether your route triggers it.
  • Malaria. Malaria is present across most of Tanzania below about 1,800 m, which includes the northern safari circuit and Zanzibar. The US CDC recommends prescription malaria prevention for travelers to Tanzania. See a travel clinician four to eight weeks before you fly; nothing on this page is medical advice.
