Luxury vs Midrange Tanzania Safari: What Changes and What Doesn't
October 27, 2026

Short answer: On a Tanzania safari, moving from midrange to luxury changes where you sleep, what you eat and how much space and service you get. It does not change the parks, the private vehicle, the guide or the game drives. Every itinerary on our site lists a Midrange, Luxury and High-End lodge for each night, on the same route. The wildlife is the same. The comfort and the price are not.
What stays the same at every tier?
Whichever lodge tier you choose on an Enclose itinerary, these do not change:
- The route and the parks. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara are the same parks whatever you pay per night.
- The vehicle. A private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, on every tier.
- The guide. The same English-speaking driver-guide for the whole safari.
- The game drives. Same number, same length, same parks.
- Park and crater fees. Charged per person by the parks, not by the lodge.
This matters because most of what makes a safari memorable happens in the vehicle. A midrange safari in the Serengeti in August sees the same herds as a high-end one.
What changes when you go from midrange to luxury?
| Midrange | Luxury | High-End | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room or tent | Comfortable, private bathroom | Larger, more design, often a deck or view | Most space, suites or villas, private terraces |
| Number of guests | Often larger lodges | Often smaller camps | Smallest or most private |
| Food and drink | Good buffet or set menus; drinks usually extra | Better menus; some include house drinks | Fine dining; drinks more often included |
| Service | Friendly, shared staff | More personal attention | Highly personal, often a dedicated host |
| Extras | Pool at some lodges | Pools, spa at some | Spa, pool, extras like bush dinners |
| Price | Starting price on the tour page | Higher | Highest |
These are patterns, not rules. Each lodge is different, so read the lodge page before you choose.

| Tarangire and Lake Manyara | Moonbow Lodge | Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge | Wellworth Lake Manyara Kilimanjaro Lodge |
| Central Serengeti | New Baobab Central Serengeti Camp | Itika Wilderness Camp | Melia Serengeti |

Which tier should you choose?
Choose Midrange if:
- The wildlife is the point and the lodge is a place to sleep.
- You want a longer trip for the same budget. The money saved on lodges can buy two or three extra days in the parks, which usually adds more to a safari than a nicer room.
- You are traveling as a family and want simple, practical rooms.
Choose Luxury if:
- You want a real step up in comfort without the top price.
- You are spending long days on game drives and want somewhere quiet and well run to come back to.
- You want smaller camps with fewer guests.
Choose High-End if:
- It is a honeymoon, anniversary or once-in-a-lifetime trip. See our 11 Days Tanzania Honeymoon Safari and Zanzibar Beach.
- Service, design and food are part of what you are traveling for.
- You want the most privacy available.
Can you mix tiers?
Yes, and it is often the best value. Because each night on our itineraries has its own three options, the trip can be built night by night. Common mixes:
- Midrange in Arusha, Luxury or High-End in the Serengeti. The Arusha night is mostly arrival and sleep; the Serengeti is where you spend the most time at the lodge between drives.
- Luxury throughout, High-End for the last two nights. Ends the trip on a high.
- Midrange on safari, upgrade on the beach. If you are adding Zanzibar, put the budget where you will spend the most waking hours at the hotel.
How much more does luxury cost?
The starting price on each tour page is the entry point. Moving to Luxury or High-End lodges raises the price, and how much depends on the specific lodges, the nights you upgrade and your travel dates, because many lodges charge more in peak season. We quote every tier option in writing so you can compare them side by side. Quick guide
- Same at every tier: parks, route, private vehicle, guide, game drives, park fees
- Different by tier: room size, design, number of guests, food and drink, service, price
- Best value: midrange plus extra days, or a mix with luxury in the Serengeti
- Best for honeymoons: High-End, at least for the Serengeti and the beach
- Next step: pick an itinerary from our safaris and ask for a quote in each tier through the inquiry form
